How to easily create and manage FTP accounts in cPanel

In this article, you will learn how to create, modify, and delete FTP accounts for your website via cPanel.

Creating an FTP account in cPanel

When you create an FTP account, cPanel creates a directory on your website that allows external users to upload and download files from the directory that you specify for the FTP account, as well as any subdirectories beneath it.

To create an FTP account on your website, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. In the search bar type “FTP” then click FTP Accounts.

  3. Under Add FTP Account, in the Login text box, type the username you wish to create the FTP account.
  4. In the Password text box, type the account password.
  5. In the Password (Again) text box, retype the account password.
  6. You can click Password Generator and cPanel generates a random, strong password for you.
  7. In the Directory text box, type the directory to which the FTP account will have access too. It is advised that you don’t give them top-level website access as they will be able to add, edit, and delete all files on your website.
  8. Specify the quota for the FTP account. By default, the quota is unlimited but if you would like to set a quota, type the number in megabytes.
  9. Click Create FTP Account. cPanel creates the account.

Changing the password for an FTP account in cPanel

If you suspect an unauthorized user has gained access to the account you should change the FTP account password immediately.

To change the password for an FTP account, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. In the search bar type “FTP” then click FTP Accounts.

  3. Under FTP Accounts, find the account password that you want to change then click Change Password.
  4. In the Password text box, type the new password.
  5. In the Password (Again) text box, retype the new password.
  6. Click Change Password.

Deleting an FTP account in cPanel

To delete an FTP account, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. In the search bar type “FTP” then click FTP Accounts.

  3. Under FTP Accounts, locate the account that you want to delete, then click Delete.
  4. If you wish to delete just the FTP account you can just press delete and it will keep all of its associated files.
  5. If you wish to delete the FTP account and all of the files in the account’s directory, select “Delete the User’s Home Directory” check box, and then click Delete.
    *Make sure other users don’t need these files as it will delete the whole subdirectory.
