To install the Wordfence Security plugin in WordPress, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your WordPress site.
  2. In the left-hand menu, Hover over plugins then click Add New.
  3. In the search bar located in the top right type: Wordfence.
  4. Click Install Now.
  5. Once it’s finished installing click Activate.
    Enter your email in the box to fully activate the plugin.

How to set up the Wordfence Security plugin in WordPress

To set up the Wordfence Security plugin in WordPress, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your WordPress site.
  2. In the left-hand menu, Hover over Wordfence, then click All Options.
  3. Under firewall, options click basic firewall options then select learning mode.
    This will learn about your website before it enables the firewall.
  4. In the advanced firewall, options enter your IP Address in the Allowlisted IP addresses that bypass all rules text box.
    This will make sure wordfence doesn’t block you when hitting 404 errors.
  5. In the Immediately block IPs that access these URLs text box, type any URLs you would like wordfence to IP Ban when a user types it.
    This could be your admin login page if you’ve moved it to a different URL.
  6. Under Bruteforce Protection select when you would like people to be locked out from the following.
    –  Lockout after how many login failures.
    – Lockout after how many forgot password attempts.
    – Count failures over what time period.
    – Amount of time a user is locked out.
  7. In Immediately block the IP of users who try to sign in as these usernames text box, type all the usernames you wish to ban the IP if they enter.
    An example would be common admin names such as admin, administrator,4dmin.
  8. Located in the top right press save changes.
