How to view & edit in cPanel’s File Manager

In this article, you will learn how to view and edit your files in cPanel’s file manager. This is useful when you need to make changes to a file that can only be accessed via cPanel.

What is File Manager

The cPanel file manager is a web-based file manager that allows you to upload, download, view & edit files. It is similar to windows file explorer and mac os finder, where you can find all your servers files. The file manager can also be accessed via an FTP account.

How to view a file in file manager

If you’re wanting to take a look at a file without editing it in the file manager, please follow these steps:

To view a file in File Manager, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Search for File Manager then click it.
  3. Find the file you’re wanting to view.
  4. Right-click on the file > press view.
  5. The file will now open in a new tab.

Editing a file using the text editor

To edit a text file such as .htaccess, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Search for File Manager then click it.
  3. Find the file you’re wanting to edit.
  4. Right-click on the file > press edit.
  5. Make sure utf-8 is selected in the dropdown (usually selected by default) > press edit.
  6. The file will now open in a new tab.
  7. Make the changes to the file you require.
  8. Press save changes located in the top right.
  9. After your changes have been successfully saved press close.

Editing a file using the HTML Editor

To edit an HTML file such as readme.html, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your cPanel account.
  2. Search for File Manager then click it.
  3. Find the file you’re wanting to edit.
  4. Right-click on the file > press HTML Edit.
  5. Select the URL where the file will be served from then press edit.
  6. The file will now open in a new tab.
  7. Make the changes to the file you require.
  8. Press save changes located in the top right.
  9. After your changes have been successfully saved press close.
